  2. SpringBoard is Launched! Thursday, January 17, 2008

CreateHere, a collective of programs working for creative development in Chattanooga, announces the launch of its SpringBoard business planning course for artists, artisans and creative entrepreneurs in the Chattanooga area.

Building upon our city’s rich history of entrepreneurial activity, CreateHere is offering 8-week courses in business plan development. Classes will follow a proven curriculum developed by Mountain BizWorks, a non-profit organization based in Asheville, North Carolina. Graduates of the BizWorks program have developed more than 1,000 businesses that are currently active in North Carolina, resulting in more than $50 million in economic impact.

“Entrepreneurship is one of our community’s strongest internal engines for economic and cultural growth,” said Josh McManus, CreateHere Creative Strategist. “However, many small businesses begin with a strong vision, but with little idea of how to sell their concept to investors or customers. SpringBoard teaches the practical application of business best practices, helping position start-ups for success.”

SpringBoard’s curriculum offers assistance in the development of mission statements, cost estimates, profit goals, cash flow statements, marketing plans, licensing agreements, and record-keeping. Participants learn valuable skills as well as receiving constructive feedback and group support.

Classes begin on March 4 and run every Tuesday from 6-9 pm. Sessions will be held at the CreateHere studio at 55 East Main Street. Fees are based on a sliding scale determined by income. Pre-registration is required, and is now open.

  3. We’re in! Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Have you ever walked through a door and found four walls begging you to take stock of their personality?  Well, that’s what it’s like walking into CreateHere’s studio on Main Street behind John Petrey’s dress sculpture.

The walls are covered with beautiful pieces of artwork, which become even more fascinating knowing everything was made by Southside artists: Roger Halligan, Terry Cannon, Samuel Burns, Amy Clyde, Katie Daniel, Mia Bergeron, Jan Chenoweth, Lisa Cutler, and Doug Gordon. Drop in to say hello, sit on an avocado-green couch, and see what’s going on.  Try to take it all in…  You may need to visit again!

  4. Andy Warhol goes to the Food Bank. Wednesday, December 19, 2007

CreateHere’s window display may look snazzy, but after the holidays this installation will be donated to Chattanooga’s local food bank to help needy members of our community.

As you prepare for your own Christmas, remember your neighbors and bring a few cans by the CreateHere studio space at 55 East Main Street.  Come in and have a look around!  By tomorrow, we should even have a place for you to sit!

Happy Holidays from Andy Warhol and the CreateHere Team!

  5. Community Supports Neighborhood Revitalization Thursday, December 13, 2007

Saturday’s MAINx24 festival was an outstanding success. From the Mural Unveiling to the Southside Holiday Parade, from the Hollis Gallery to the CreatedHere exhibit in the Lofts on Main, from streetside steel drums to an old-time jam session, from the CreateHere Cocktail Party to the Coptix Christmas Party 2k7, it was a day that will not be matched any time soon!  Residents came out en masse, and visitors saw what the fuss is all about: there is something to believe in on Main Street.

An estimated 2000+ people visited the Southside throughout the day.  With over 25 scheduled events, MAINx24 had something for everyone in the mix.  More than the number of people on the streets, the diversity of the crowd hit the heart of the Southside.  Curious new faces peered in buildings, and old friends lingered on the sidewalk.  Main Street’s merchants and artists had a booming day; many doubled their normal business flow by mid-afternoon Saturday!  Aside from the positive economic impact, MAINx24 gave the Southside neighborhoods an enthusiastic thumbs-up for their revitalization efforts. Morale is high, and momentum is only building.  With new doors opening and more contracts closing in the coming months, the Southside’s revitalization is garnering respect among Chattanoogans.

It’s hard to describe Saturday’s energy without heaping adjective upon adjective, but the message is clear: change is in the air and on the street.

    There’s still work to do.
Do you believe in Main Street?
