  1. WE Rock Summit: August 5 through 8 Thursday, August 06, 2009

This week, Chattanooga plays host to the WE Rock Summit, a ground-breaking tour and conference that aims to develop standards for web education, world-wide. By advocating accessibility and usability, the members of the Open Web Education Alliance (OWEA) are bringing the issue of web education to the forefront. From the people behind the WE Rock Summit:

“OWEA members are devoted to the cause of improving web education because there is a great need for change in how the Web is being taught. Many universities and schools do not teach web standards and best practices. As a result, students are woefully unprepared to meet industry demands upon graduation which in turn puts an unnecessary burden on employers who are then required to put extensive training into the graduates to bring them up to speed. The goal of OWEA is to bring together individuals, companies, and organizations with strong interests in the Web and web education. It’s time to help the next generation of web professionals’ rock!”

    Summit Participants include:
    John Allsopp, Web Directions
    Jeffrey Brown, Damascus High School
    Mark Dubois, WOW
    Scott Fegette, Adobe
    Ben Friedman, Iconologic
    Lars Gunther, Consultant
    Aaron Gustafson, Easy! Designs

  3. Call to Writers: 3 Blind Elephants, a New Media Literary Journal, Now Accepting Submissions

A new online literary journal, 3 Blind Elephants, is now accepting submissions and is preparing for a public launch this fall.

Armed with good intentions and strong opinions about literature and technology, 3 Blind Elephants strives to show by example what a good literary journal can be in the digital age: easy to access, and fascinating to read.

3 Blind Elephants will focus on new short fiction, mainly under 2000 words—“short enough to read on a train commute”—but will also publish occasional essays, reviews, and experimental writing that will inspire and confound readers. By winter, the journal will host regular themed contests in conjunction with several graduate writing programs across the United States and Canada.

For 3 Blind Elephants, founder Christopher DeWan teams up with established short story writers and MFA writing students, as well as artists who generally work in other genres, hoping to prove that though reading and writing are being changed by new media, they are still very much alive, and as interesting as ever.
