55here has a history of exhibiting work by local artists around themes that engage and inspire. With the expansion of our programming in 2009, our sights and scope have broadened, and we offer our space as an open-source exhibition hall for artists in Chattanooga and abroad.

  • 11.23.09 - 12.31.09 We Stand | A Civic Engagement Laboratory

    CreateHere is pleased to present We Stand, a pop-up civic engagement laboratory designed in partnership with Chattanooga Stand. This event, which runs through December 31, 2009, addresses local and global challenges, finding tools and citizen-owned solutions to even the most overwhelming problems. We Stand is about the harnessing the power of place.

  • 09.21 - 10.30.09 “persona | anima” exhibit

    “I think, therefore I am.” Is it really that simple? Persona | Anima is an exhibition hosted at 55Here that pairs traditional and non-traditional figurative artwork, as well as interactive activities to tackle questions of identity.

    Persona | Anima opens Monday, September 21 and features work by Mia Bergeron, Ana Marie Cox, Kimara Dawn, Matt Grady, Tara Harris, Thomas Shaw, Michael Woods, and Daniel Wroe. In addition to 2D and 3D works, the exhibition features an interactive component that allows visitors to explore and document the many parts of their persona.

  • 09.12.09 Gallery Hop, HWS Closing Reception

    The Association for Visual Arts (AVA) announced the 4th Annual Downtown Chattanooga Gallery Hop. Several local galleries and artist studios were added to the roster since last year. First Tennessee Bank was the title sponsor, and AVA produced the event in collaboration with the Chattanooga Downtown Partnership and Planning and Design Studio.

    HelloWorld.show(); featured work from programmers and contemporary artists across the world, with front- and back-end code presented in non-traditional formats.

  • May 27-July 17, 2009 Zero Sum | Experiments in Game Theory

    Zero Sum examined the role of games in contemporary culture and the impact they have on our social experience, psyche, morality and approach to critical thinking. From Twister in the family room to animated flash games on the web, Zero Sum found a space to explore why we play games, and what our games say about us.

  • March 24-May 15, 2009 Faces | the human face through the eyes of 12 artists

    This exhibition featured work from local artists on the theme or portraiture, traditional and non-traditional. Faces was held in conjunction with Palate2Palette

  • February 23-March 21, 2009 New Views | an exploration of public and private nostalgia

    MakeWork grant recipients Dana Shavin and Daryl Thetford exhibited photographic works side-by-side in this joint-exhibition. Shavin’s work focused on the role of place in childhood, where Thetford’s examined the importance of Americana relics.

  • December 6, 2008 A Showcase in Blue

    Curated by local artist Miki Boni, “A Showcase in Blue,” featured work from 20 Southside artists, and was held in conjunction with Mainx24.

  • October 30-November 28, 2008 Scary Stuff | phobia inspired art

    Scary Stuff was an exploration into phobias and spooky artifacts. The show featured painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media from local artists, and was held in conjunction with Halloween.

  • September 13-October 24, 2008 Feast | an artistic indulgence

    A culinary exploration into the carft of feasting, this exhibit featured works of painting, sculpture and photography. Held in conjunction with AVA’s annual gallery hop, the show invited Chattanoogans to indulge their senses with arts, eats, and treats.

  • July 16-September 5, 2008 Respect

    Every artist has one or more artists whose work and creative process they hold in high esteem. “Respect” featured the work of ten respected artists, invited by their Chattanooga colleagues.

  • May 28-July 11, 2008 Surface Issues | tactile explorations

    Surface Issues is an exploration into the textures—internal and external, visual and actual—that make up a piece of art. Together, the pieces in this show uncovered the intrinsic value of the creative process and its manifestation in the fine arts.

  • April 8-May 20, 2008 Storm Cycle | works by tomas mann

    Storm Cycle featured the work of local artists Thomas Mann. Mann has been an active participant in the contemporary American craft movement for the past thirty years as an artist, gallery owner and lecturer, and he describes himself as an artist working in the medium of jewelry and sculpture.

  • January 15-March 29, 2008 Passages

    Passages featured work from local artists, paired with excerpts from the cannon of Southern literature.

  • December 6, 2007-January 7, 2008 material + concept + method | sculpture and design exhibition

    Sculpture and Graphic Design students from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga teamed up for this show, which featured performance art, installation, multi-media pieces, in addition to more traditional mediums and presentations.
